London, 1717.; In 1717 Montgomery secured from the proprietors of Carolina a grant of all lands between the rivers Altamaha and Savannah, to be erected into a distinct province. To this he gave the name of Margravate of Azilia; no colonists were sent out, however, and at the end of three years the grant became void by its own limitations.; DeRenne, 6.; The first effort to establish an English colony south of the Savannah River occurred in 1717 when the Carolina Proprietors granted to Sir Robert Montgomery the land between the Savannah and Altamaha rivers to create a separate colony. Within this land grant, Montgomery proposed to create the Margravate of Azilia.
